Community and Civic Groups
The important missions of neighborhood associations, fraternal
groups, professional associations and other community-based
groups can offer the potential for widespread and innovative
mentoring opportunities. By striving to improve the quality
of life for its members and the community at large, these
organizations uniquely positioned to provide support and
assistance to budding mentoring programs and to recruit
mentors from within their ranks. Here are just a few ways
community and civic groups can get involved:
-
Create a mentoring program partnership with your club,
association or organization and a group of children
who share your interests
-
Speak to a group of young people in a mentoring program
or at a school
-
Sponsor special recognition activities during National
Mentoring Month (January) and throughout the year.
The concept of mentoring is a simple one, but mobilizing communities
and recruiting mentors takes a continuous flow of creative energy
and commitment. Contact MMP for information, referrals and assistance
in starting a program, getting connected to an existing one, hosting
special youth activities, technical support on sustaining relationships
or just learning more about how mentoring works.
